Wait what's this thread for if we have a bunch of music threads already? VocaDB discussion?
>>

>VocaDB discussion?
Yes, among other things.
>>
I should probably explain myself. I've been listening to songs posted in the threads linked in the OP because I wanted to find music that I really like and that I haven't heard before; I use VocaDB and RYM for the same purpose. I made this thread because I realized that there wasn't really anywhere for me to talk about this outside of the Vocaloid General.

Right now I'm relistening to the top scoring songs on VocaDB, trying to get a feel for what kinds of music that I enjoy, and figuring out where I should look for new music next.

Assuming this is the right thread to discuss this, does anybody know why the site MikuDB hasn't been touched in about two years now? It was the go-to database for Vocaloid albums for years
>>
>>18250
They actually stopped updating it in 2024. the magical mirai album is there but that's the only 2024 release available.

Use https://lvchart.com/ or https://vocaloard.injpok.tokyo/en/

I'm pretty sure it was working the day before yesterday, or a day before that, so Monday or Tuesday.

>>18375
LocalVoid only tracks what's trending (unless I'm missing something) so that goes here >>108
Vocaloard does have an all time view count though
https://vocaloard.injpok.tokyo/en/?k=1&p=0
It goes up to 300 songs.

I had just discovered Vocaloid Rankings, so I barely got to use it, but the GitHub says it pulled info from VocaDB, so it must have had more functionality than this.
>>
>>18442
I think you could also see voicebank popularity rankings but i might be mistaking it for another site

I wonder if went down because of how many songs were coming out during Vocacolle lol

what the hell it's down again. I'm never gonna get to use this site.

I think VocaDB users in aggregate have pretty good taste (certainly better than total song views on video platforms) but I do find myself disagreeing with the rankings a lot. Covers tend to receive little attention, and when they do I often don't agree their placement (I prefer the original Electric Angel and Song of the Eared Robot, over Giga's version and Machine Love, respectively [though the later is technically not cover]). And while cannot expect to agree with every song/album rating, I think a major problem lies in the scoring system.

Liking a song increases its score by 2, and favoriting a song increases its score by 3, with no way to contribute a negative score. This means that popular songs that more overall users like will score higher than songs that a larger proportion of users like but that are more obscure. Albums do have star ratings, but sorting by rating average does not take the total number of ratings into account, and total score only sorts by popularity; you cannot sort by both at the same time.

Rate Your Music also suffers from similar problems, where there is a massive gulf between albums that have thousands of ratings and those with almost none. However, RYM lets users rate albums with a five star system, with a sorting algorithm that balances the star rating with the total number of ratings, so albums need a high star rating with enough total ratings to appear at the top of the list.

What I'm looking for is a user rated list of songs where the general consensus is that they are good, not just popular; problems aside, after adding the song charts, RYM more or less provides this, just not for vocal-synth music for some reason.
https://rateyourmusic.com/charts/top/song/all-time/g:vocaloid%2dscene/
(The list is empty for me.)
>>
>>18344
I checked the GitHub again, and it looks like the site's being worked on now, so hopefully soon it will stay up consistently. At least we know the site is definitely not dead.
>>
>>19023
I'm a fan of their rating system but RYM has this issue where people who don't typically listen to Vocaloid will rate a Vocaloid song and it ends up with a rating under 3 as a result.
>>
>>18856
It's up for me

It's funny that RYM's search is inexplicably worse than VocaDB's in some respects; trying to find music in languages other than English is awful. RYM does not index the translated titles for releases, it only searches for the title in the original language, even when the English translation is literally on the cover.

Is there a good reason that both producers and voicebanks are in the artist category on VocaDB? I know that releases will often credit the vocalsynths that were used, but it seems incredibly weird to me to combine them together for a database.

I just remembered that you can exclude tags on VocaDB by pressing the "Include" button. I've been listening to hours of music from genres that I wasn't looking for.
>>
Do any of you still use NND to discover new music? I know it was very common before everyone started uploaing on youtube but there are still songs that are exclusive to NND
>>
>>20321
Only during Vocacolle these days. Admittedly, after a lot of the region restrictions, I slowly phased out of using it.

That said, anyone excited for Vocagathering this weekend? Seems some JP producers are joining in this time too.

I've only ever used Niconico to watch videos that have been linked elsewhere, same with Bilibili. Admittedly, I've found some of my favorite music through YouTube recommendations, but I resent the lack of control that I had in the process.

On VocaDB, is there any way to view alternative versions of a song in the main search engine and not as a list on the original song page? The closest I can think of is to search for the song name, but the results vary by what language you use, and it doesn't show everything.
>>
>>21323
I don't think so

I kinda wish VocaDB allowed instrumental remixes of Vocaloid originals.

I love VocaDB but man do i hate its tagging system. Worlds by Porter Robinson is somehow tagged "Downtempo" and unlike on sites like RYM you can't downvote tags.
>>
>>30090
At least for this specific tag I believe they've treated it strictly about BPM since they've aliased it to "slowtempo" but it's sort of useless this way. In general though you can report tags and they usually will get deleted if it's egregious.

Always is. I can't really blame them because at that age i would probably fall for the bait too but I hate that it works and as a result it gets pushed to the top while the actual good songs remain hidden.

>>
>>37204
I agree, it wasn’t loading at all for me the other day which was extremely frustrating
>>
>>37257
I wonder why that happens. Do they have their servers in Asia or something? But even asian websites load faster than VocaDB for me.
>>
>>37576
Pretty sure they gained about 10x the traffic in the last few years and haven't upgraded the servers or anything
>>
>>37576
Server, not servers. All three databases (VocaDB, UtauDB, TouhouDB) are hosted on one Windows server in the EU. There is no money going in, minimal development, and this is all exacerbated by aggressive scrapers (they tune Cloudflare Turnstile to be more aggressive sometimes depending on activity).
Everyone should treat it as a fragile resource. Database dumps happen, but the software is brittle and the management is a cobbled volunteer staff.

They have a Patreon for server costs but they barely advertise it. Wonder how much it would cost for them to invest in a better setup
>>
>>37579
We really need to have a proper archive for vocalsynth stuff that preferrably actually hosts said content. I think having something like archive.org but just for our stuff would be stellar.
>>
>>37582
You mean something like MikuDB but that actually works?
>>
>>37584
what's wrong with mikudb
>>
>>37627
Nothing's wrong with MikuDB itself, it's just that all the links are dead and the site hasn't been updated since 2024
>>
>>37584
MikuDB isnt an archival site because it doesnt actually host the content on site, it just links to it. Hence all the broken links. Im talking about something that would actually store videos, music files, on site. I know thats a very big task and its not feasible unless you have a lot of money but a guy can dream
>>
>>37635
It'd be very, very hard to make something like that
>>
Someone really needs to revive MikuDB conceptually. Back in the day there were tons of blogspot blogs dedicated to uploading Vocaloid albums in good quality, now there's nothing.
