Fuck it, Engloid thread. I feel like they don't get the love they deserve so let's talk about them here.
>>
How did Engloids fall off so hard? It's not like no one cares about Vocaloid music in English, all those recent Teto and Miku songs and even Butcher Vanity prove there's still a market for it but it wasn't long ago when everybody was obsessed with Oliver and Big AL. You rarely hear people talk about them anymore.

Oliver will probably return eventually now that he has an AI voicebank. It's only a matter of time before we see new songs with him.

Engloid as a concept lives on through SynthV and soon Maghni AI (they're the ones making AI voicebanks of all the PowerFX 'loids). With the Zero-G ones its a bit uncertain, I doubt we'll be seeing Avanna, Sonika, Tonio, Prima, etc get updated voicebanks anytime soon. Sonika is confirmed to have had a V4 in progress but it was cancelled around the time Vocaloid 5 came out.

Fuck Yamaha.

I was informed that Vocatone's new voicebanks might have different voice providers. This was known for Oliver since apparently Vocatone is now against using real children for their voicebanks (likely because of songs like the very infamous "Gay Sex", let's be honest) but apparently Ann/Al will not be voiced by Frank and Jody. I don't know how true this is but it's definitely worrying.

so is zero-g officially done with vocaloid? i know vocatone/pfx are still around
>>

"i know vocatone/pfx are still around" About PFX..haha..
Unless you know something I don't, PFX's involvement with Vocaloid ended with Bil Bryant leaving the company. Is Vocatone the only dedicated Engloid company left? That's kinda sad
>>
>>487
Isn't Vocatone part of PowerFX? Every "returning" Maghni voicebank so far has been a previously released PFX voicebank (Big AL, Sweet Ann, Oliver, Ruby, etc).
>Is Vocatone the only dedicated Engloid company left?
From the Vocaloid (software) era, yes. There's still English only voicebanks being developed for SynthV.
>>
>>488
>From the Vocaloid (software) era, yes. There's still English only voicebanks being developed for SynthV.
Yeah, I should've specified that I was referring specifically to English Vocaloids and not vsynths in general orz
>Isn't Vocatone part of PowerFX? Every "returning" Maghni voicebank so far has been a previously released PFX voicebank (Big AL, Sweet Ann, Oliver, Ruby, etc).
Originally I thought they were more akin to a circle a la VOCALOMAKETS (even if they are an actual business/LLC) but the Vocaloid wiki does say they're a spin-off company? Interesting..even then I feel that's different from being actually part of PFX, who I heard dropped out of Vocaloid after YOHIOloid + Bil Bryant's departure to focus on Soundation (which makes them way more money) a long time ago.
Vocatone is mostly comprised of fans from the community too, but I don't really keep up with Vocatone, Maghni AI, or PFX's Vocaloid stuff outside of Oliver so I may be wrong or something might have changed. (God willing)
Unless I missed something, the "returning" vocals are also still solely speculation and haven't been confirmed to be old Engloids yet (even though I agree some look similar and probably are)
I'll have to look into it more..we'll both have to wait and see.

Even if i'm not a fan, the creepy 3D models at least sounded better than whatever the hell they went with for V6. I don't know what it is about V6 voicebanks that i dislike but i haven't heard a single good one. Can't be the engine noise because CEVIO is way worse in that regard and yet i love KAFU.

Agree. Probably the flatness of the vocals, they sound so bad because Yamaha got rid of 90% of the parameters and I'm not even kidding. Vocaloid has always had this problem but at least in the past end-users had a way to correct it without spending $500+ on VSTs. Pretty sure even "Character" and "Expression" were added via updates and weren't even there on release.
The comments on that video are pretty telling LOL (but I also prefer KAFU + CeVIO and Voisona to SynthV or Vocaloid personally)

I think about engloids a lot. I feel like a lot of them are very unique but failed to get the love they deserve just for the fact that 90% of vocaloid's fanbase is japanese. Prima, tonio, avanna and even miriam all have very interesting voices (especially the first two, they're currently the only vocalsynths made for opera until that new synthv comes out). Even Sonika who admittedly is the least interesting of the bunch (even if i and most of this site love her) has at least some charm and a distinct voice that cannot be compared to other vsynths.

Have we even gotten a purposely cutesy (both voice and design) English vocal since Sonika? Vocals marketed for pop alone don't count to me imo (especially since deep-voiced pop singers like Adele exist, and Solaria is more similar to Adele than Hatsune Miku outside of having a character design. That might be why people are still so attached to Sonika in the first place.)

Voices that have character designs aren't inherently character vocals to me either, the Starry Court (Solaria, Asterian and them) are marketed as professional pop, bass etc. vocals and not cute characters.

I don't even listen to country music and would still kill for a country-loid with a similar design and voice in a cartoony style similar to Alex Ahad or any of the Skullgirls artists. and a voice like Applejack's (´・ω・`)

i'm pretty sure sonika was meant to be exactly that when they made her. her original boxart used the render in picrel for a long time before the redesign. it was in late 2009 that they decided to market her vb towards the fandom instead of the actual producers and do contests and interact with the community via twitter.

i honestly wish they still did the twitter stuff with new vocaloids. it made them feel more "real". like you were reading some celebrity's tweets. the only account that still somewhat does this is oliver and it's not even close to what sonika's account was.

Even if Sonika was the first, Japanese loids still do this luckily! Tsuina's is very..interesting..

Part of me wishes CYVA/CYMAN's voicebanks had Japanese counterparts (no, VY1/VY2 don't count) so people would make more stuff with them. I know CYVA has a couple originals but the only good ones are the ones Circus/Crusher made because they're the only engloid producers who know how to tune and mix.

CYMAN has uhh… his demos and that's it.

Eleanor seems like another one of those banks that just happens to have a character design for marketing reasons but still has a mature and/or professional voice, like the Eclipsed Sounds banks. Especially because she was just another reference voicebank by Kanru (because I think this was before Dreamtonics even existed iirc) until Animen bought her rights and just slapped the cute girl on it. I wish there was a loli/cutesy sounding English voicebank (on literally any VSynth), Sonika may not be a loli but her voice is still way cuter than the average Engloid, native English SynthV etc.
Hell, even Miku English herself sounds mature! Maybe Maghni AI will deliver with Imani, I heard a rumor that a Maghni AI bank is going to be voiced by a voice actor instead of the typical amateur or professional singer that English banks get, hell even Oliver himself is a choir boy’s voice and not intended to be a character, and to my knowledge choir boys are trained by professionals.
What I’m seeking is an Engloid with a voice like KAFU/Zundamon/POPY/Gwar Gura (lmao), not just an Engloid with a character design because there are probably tons of those esp. if we include UTAU. Unfortunately it’s probably going to take a long time because English anime VAs are probably scared of AI aside from VTubers most of them also suck, and “normal” English VAs who do things like cartoons are probably either too expensive to hire or will also see AI and assume vocal synths are “trying to steal their jobs.”

Take this with a grain of salt because vidrel is the only Eleanor song I know and listen to regularly (I’m not really interested in covers anymore) and she sounds pretty mature in it to me.
>>
>>1279
I unironically want something to come out of this Sonika meme so we can show vsynth companies cute girls can sell in the West too. I wish whoever was trying to make Sonika V4 did a crowdfund, I’m sure people would love it. Maybe she’ll get a Maghni AI since a bunch of other previously “abandoned” Engloids are speculated to? God willing. It seems like Sonika is still available on ZeroG’s website as well, even adding her to cart works. Does she come with the V2 editor? I swear I saw someone say either Miku or all V2 voicebanks come with the editor. If true, does V2 run well on Windows10?
>>

Wait I remember she exists, and there’d also a high chance she has the same voice provider and/or was created by the same people as Yami Ryone. Rarely see content with her though..Also sucks she looks like a loli but is canonically 21. Cowards.
>>
>>1284
All the discontinued 'loids that got on Maghni were PFXloids because VocaTone are a spinoff company of PowerFX. Sonika on the other hand is developed by Zero-G who quit the vsynth scene after Yanaha fucked them over.
>>
>>1343
It’s Sonikover
>>
I dont think zero-g cares much about their loids. MIRIAM's vp asked for an upgrade about 10 years ago and to this day she's stuck on V1. After DEX and DAINA they basically dipped. I wonder if they're still in contact with Aki Glancy.
>>
When are we gonna see an engloid revival? and i dont mean SynthVs like Eleanor

i want actual engloids.
>>
I wish we had an ENGloid for V6, but most likely we will have one more english-speaking default yamaha VB. and considering that most voicebanks can sing in mandarin, chinese or english, it wouldn't matter either way. we're doomed orz
>>
>>1642
Isn't po-uta one?
>>
>>1643 we need one more….
>>
>>1642
>>1646
Impossible in 2025. PFX quit Vocaloid plus they're developing their own engine under Vocatone and Zero-G quit the vocalsynth scene after Yamaha fucked them over while they were making Sonika V4. (That last one hurts the most imo, not even because of Sonika but because it felt like Zero-G was the one company that cares the most about the WVF).

Oddly enough I really like Amy and Ken's voices. Kaori has a lower quality voice and I'm neutral on Chris. I wish we got more VBs that weren't just white or East Asian. I enjoy vocal variety.
>>4498
Eclipsed Sounds actively embraces the Western communities, specifically the American and UK ones. I hate Solaria's design and voice but aside from her and the purple opera one I can never spell right, I think Eclipsed has an alright output. Elanor is also very hard to obtain, so that's why I'm guessing people moved on. I love Dreamtonics' banks despite them not having designs. I like drawing up concepts but I never end up finishing them.
My favorite ES bank is HXVOC, but Asterian is very high up there.
>>
>>4502
I personally like both their voices and design but yeah they're not made for the average vsynth weeb, they're made for producers
>>
>>4503
It's kind of funny how small the "western producer who refuses to use a weeb voicebank" market is even today after 10+ attempts to appeal to them. Maybe there's some community I don't know about, but it feels like Eclipsed is the only group to come close to widespread adoption, and their products have character designs that are plenty goofy and "unprofessional". I don't see any real reason why the professional bank/unprofessional bank divide needs to exist.
>>
https://youtube.com/watch?v=6Zlktx_rml0 YouTube
There's a producer i follow who's obsessed with Eleanor. They rarely make originals but when they do they're great, vidrel is one of them. They're very 90's sounding in a good way.
>>
>>4507
Teto saved the western SV scene
>>
>>4508
The lyrics are silly but you're right it does sound very 90's rock.
>>
>>4509
I'm not surprised that Teto got popular with western producers. The reason they didn't use her before is because unless you're CircusP making Japanese voicebanks sing in English is a pain in the ass. With Teto having multilang support now that barrier is broken.
>>
>>4511
Yeah the barrier has always been how linguistically complicated English is. I look at the phoneme codes Vocaloid has (Q? V?) and smh
>>
>>4512
It's not just that. Before SynthV existed people used English versions of voicebanks that were already popular in Japan such as Luka, Gumi and Miku instead of Big AL, Sonika, Tonio, etc because let's face it everybody knows who Miku is but ask a Vocaloid fan who Big AL is and they probably have no idea. So SynthV having multilanguage support and Teto being the most popular voicebank in Japan on top of SV itself being cheaper than V6 means a lot of Western producers were able to buy Teto and put her in their songs.
>>
>>4511
I actually enjoy making JP Vocaloids sing in English, but UTAUs are a pain without extra phonemes.
Part of why I make so many cover and so few originals is because the practice of converting phonemes and tuning is fun to me but I never learned proper music theory and am a perfectionist with melodies, so what I put out is usually the result of a long struggle.
>>
>>4515
I mean, Kikuo never learned music theory either and was told not to because it'd make his music boring
>>
>>4528
And Kikuo is extremely talented and I like his work. I guess everything I make just sounds bad to me so I rarely release it. I don't really know how to make things more interesting

You could broadly group EN-Ps into
>Group A: producers that care about realism and ease of use
>Group B: producers that care about otaku culture
I’d say A is most likely to prefer SynthV banks and B as most likely to use Miku/Teto. The V3/V4 era engloids kind of fall in an awkward middle ground. Of course you should represent the vocaloid era you love most as >>7537 suggests.

As far as i know they're the only Engloid company now ever since PFX shut down. And I know Vocatone owns the rights to their voicebanks + are working on Maghni but ever since that blogpost it feels like the chances of it releasing are low. Still I hope that the Vocatone team are able to push forward and get it out there.

That being said PFX is dead, ZG is dead and Yamaha still makes stuff but it's very low quality compared to Cyber Diva and Songman.

So, after 2 whole decades, have any of the unknown Engloid voice providers been revealed/found? I was reading an archived VO discussion yesterday about Sweet Ann possibly being Jody Martin, but I don't think it sounds like her at all. Out of the PFXloids i know that AL has been found: https://soundcloud.com/franksanderson1
>>
>>17903
Aside from the cancelled V4 Sonika bank, which was voiced by the utaite Rachie, not really. I'd imagine it'd be hard to identify vocalists like Prima and Tonio's VPs, and in the case of Sonika i'm like 90% sure the voice provider was probably just a friend of one of the developers.

Do people ITT who want these old voicebanks to come back just want their favorite character back or do they actually care about the voice too?
>>
>>26721
It's voice and character for me but mostly voice considering a lot of the Engloids from the V2 era didn't even have a design.

Now if they brought the characters back but with a new VP I wouldn't complain but I would still have mixed feelings. Maghni already brought back Oliver with a new VP and while I'm not exactly fond of the American accent (Oliver is meant to be a Brit) the voice is similar enough for it to not completely bother me. Ann and AL were rumored to have been recast for Maghni as well (and not by Michael King unfortunately) but since they never revealed anything beyond a silhouette I can't really form an opinion.

Sonika V4 as Rachie would've been weird but interesting to see. Again, Sonika is canonically meant to be a Brit like Oliver and Rachie is Indonesian plus her voice is very different from Sonika V2's so I don't know how that would've worked.

Regardless, I likely wouldn't have minded it, I've wanted a Sonika update for ages now.
>>
>>26722
God, same. Sonika was meant to be to the US/UK market what Hatsune Miku was to the Japanese one and it really bothers me that she never had her chance to shine. Imagine what the mid-late 2010's Western scene would've been had that V4 voicebank released.
>>
>>26729
>>26722
I don't think it was entirely Yamaha's fault that Sonika flopped.

Zero-G just kinda failed at attracting the Otaku crowd by using that League of Legends-esque design instead of something moe like the Taiwan / China re-releases. She's also very hard to use.
>>
>>26787
Imagine if Sonika succeeded and there was a popular engloid community where everything looked like Overwatch
>>
>>26800

>>

Kanru literally formant shifted her voice to ensure this on top of the anime style avatar for her.

>>
>>28343
Same here. Back in the day there was an entire news blog dedicated to Engloids.
>>
>>28343
Not really. Engloids basically vanished after the V4 era. V5 had re releases of the CYBERs that no one cared for and after that crosslang was added to most engines making the "Engloid" a thing of the past. We had Eleanor, i guess, but she's discontinued.

Technically a lot of Dreamtonics' letterloids are but I'm still stuck in the 2010's so to me the definition of an Engloid is still "A voicebank released exclusively in English". For example Avanna and Sonika have never had a non-English voicebank.

With Zero-G being completely absent and refusing to update their Vocaloids, PowerFX merging into Soundation and discontinuing all their vocaloids, Yamaha not updating CYMAN/CYVA and Vocatone shooting themselves in the foot i think it's safe to say that the ENGloid era is officially over.

Most English AI vsynths go for the neutral "singing" accent. International Pop Song English, if you will. It's nice for ease of use, but I do kind of miss when vocal synths had different accents. Oliver, Sonika and Leon being British, Lola having her British-Caribbean hybrid accent, Avanna being Irish, Miriam being South African, Sweet Ann having hints of Australian pronunciation here and there, and of course all the American Vocaloids. And even the non-native Japanese-English voicebanks with their strong accents that come directly from the voice providers' effort rather than extra AI data. SynthV is making accents a thing of the past, isn't it...
>>
>>34246
Hes only dead if you're unwilling to pirate >:) (for legal reasons i am joking)
>>
>>34247
If it counts, many of the non english voicebanks with english support like Teto have accents
>>
>>34247
samefagging but yeah
Maybe ive just trauma bonded with the synthetic nature and unease of use of classic Engloids but i just dont find AI Engloids to be compelling for this reason. With the exception of Eleanor Forte and Teto SV i struggle to bring to mind what the other guys sound like.
>>
I guess it doesn't really matter as much which voicebank you choose anymore because they'll all speak all the languages anyway. Even English SynthVs seem to have their time in the spotlight with a few covers before it goes back to the popular characters like Teto and Yi Xi. (Marvin of the last Dreamtonics batch hardly got anything at all, and I think his voice is really nice...)

I hope JOVIE gets some hype behind her at least. She has a cute design and a nice voice and people have been asking for a country vocal for a while.
>>
On a somewhat related note, what's an accent you'd love to see represented in a vsynth at some point? I've always wanted to hear a Scottish Vocaloid. A Welsh Vocaloid would be pretty cool too.

Am I correct in assuming basically all the western vocaloids were programmed by Anders or his associates? Zero-G worked with him, so did PowerFX, and it was Anders who brought Vocatone and later Syo into it. We all know that when Anders left, the engloid scene basically died. There was this guy at Zero-G, Dom Keefe, but it's not exactly clear if he did any of the actual programming either.

Dom was project manager for Leon and Lola, sound engineer and a "producer" (he made a few of their demos)

I can’t say the exact cases for the other Zero-G and PFX banks but considering VocaTone and Syo did the work themselves, I think Anders played a similar administrative role for everyone else.

Safe to say that the era of the OG engloids is fully over?
>>
>>35667
Hard to know until something comes out about Maghni AI or the rightsholders of PFX/ZG characters. For now i'd say they're in limbo and we likely won't receive an update on them for the remainder of the decade.

Sometimes i wonder what a new Miriam voicebank would look like. Would they stick with a photo of Miriam Stockley as the cover or redesign her like E-capsule did with Tonio and Prima?.

Found out that someone colored the Sonika comics years ago

one year ago but you get the point

Is Po-uta the only Engloid based on a non-JP celebrity?
>>
>>36537
As far as i know, yeah. Honestly, i'm kinda surprised we don't have more considering how many of them seem to be into Vocaloid but maybe that's for the better.
>>
>>36537
No, we have Yohio, but idk if you'd consider him a western celebrity or a celebrity at all.
>>36538
A Grimes voicebank is the last thing we need so thank god.
>>
>>36539
>A Grimes voicebank
Technically already exists, just not on Vocaloid
>>
>>36539
I forget that Yohioloid exists

Why is she red in the 2nd comic
>>
>>36792
Artist's choice but canonically she can change the color of her hair

I'm so used to Mario's and E-Capsule's designs of her that I forget she once looked like this
>>
>>36819
The old design really makes her look like a sim

To boot it’s the only voicebank the main/global branch of TuneCore supports 😭

My favorite Engloid and probably the most underrated from the PFX family
>>
>>36833
Isn't Tunecore a music distributor? or do they have some sort of vocal synth i was not aware of
>>
>>37115
i'm excited for her new voicebank, if nChant ever comes out
>>
>>37115
I'm sure she'll be more popular when nChant releases (cope)
>>
>>37128
In the event nChant actually releases and actually turns out to be good, that genuinely might be plausible because the Vocaloid engine really didnt do her voice justice and made her sound too similar to Cyber Diva. If she were just on a better engine that better captured the characteristics of her voice better she'd be spectacular
