I think desktop pets are better than shimeji. Shimeji just kind of sit there and do nothing but block your view. Desktop pets are more interactive. I never used either before so I wouldn't know where to find them or how Im supposed to write desktop pet in Japanese.

Did you know that there’s an MP3 player+desktop buddy called Flele?
The underlying software has a lot of other desktop buddy uses but you need to know Japanese to get much out of it.

Desktop pets are fine but i think shimejis have their own charm. I think my first desktop pet was Felix the Cat for Windows 95/XP lol. I remember downloading him off a sketchy site as a kid.

A more modern take on Shimejis would be something like Desktop Mate, which has a bunch of Vocaloid DLCs. Unfortunately they removed mod support and i'd imagine it's a pain in the ass to pirate the DLCs anyway.
