When ECHO started being considered a classic. I was there when it came out.

If you remember when Gakupo, Lily and Gumi were at the same height as the Cryptonloids you're a vocaboomer. Gakupo died quickly, Lily remained popular for a bit until niki dropped her and Gumi still has a couple popular songs to this day like KING but she's not nearly as popular as she once was and no one uses her V6/SV banks.

I'm not a vocaboomer by any means but hearing people call Zatsune Miku and character items forgotten/old makes me feel like I've landed in another dimension

It was a very slow and dawning realization that didn't fully hit me until I tried being less of a recluse in the community. I've been around since ~2011, I remember when V3 was first coming out; Oliver and Kaito V3's demos being posted, everyone excited about what's to come.
I started feeling the disconnect when talking with local fans for Miku Expo 2018 who had only been around the scene for a couple years or so at that point. It mainly dawned on me when I realized after posting covers on YT and starting to get some traction that the community at large is completely cut off from what it was when I found it.
The western side of the community thrived back in the day by sharing and archiving VSQ files (credited even at the time), making art, fan-subbing, and tolerating each other. Now most people seem to be of a highly-sensitive disposition and take everything too seriously, bordering on treating earnest appreciation of their work as an insult somehow…
I've stopped uploading covers for a while because I'm tired of the negative response for my genuine attempts to contribute. If anyone knows of alternative platforms that are more receptive than YT, I would greatly appreciate the info!!

Welcome to the Vocaloid community in 2025. New fans typically don't know much about Vocaloid before the late 2010's. Partly it's due to the rhythm games (It's not just Sekai that's guilty but also Diva and Mirai) which focus on the Crypton six, and the fact that social media algorithms mostly push Miku or Teto songs. Mesmerizer in 2024 basically set a new meta and every producer's pretty much been following it outside of a select few.

>If anyone knows of alternative platforms that are more receptive than YT
Youtube still dominates video sharing websites and will continue to do so for years to come so i can only think of NND (which i'm sure you're familiar with at this point) as an alternative. It's japanese, yeah, and i'm not sure if they even allow IP's from other countries anymore, but it's the only way you're gonna be safe from the gaijin.

>Mesmerizer in 2024 basically set a new meta and every producer's pretty much been following it outside of a select few.
I've still never listened to Mesmerizer but yeah, I noticed an influx of new people taking interest around that time. It caught me off guard when some of the dudes I've talked with on and off for years who never had more than a passing interest in 'loids started bringing it up & posting fanart related to it.

>Youtube still dominates video sharing websites and will continue to do so for years to come so i can only think of NND (which i'm sure you're familiar with at this point) as an alternative. I hear ya. It's not even 'the gaijin' necessarily that bothers me, it's just that YouTube is an overpopulated cesspit at this point. I'm not the type to make covers to get personal attention; rather, I just want to share things I love and am passionate about with people who will hopefully enjoy them as well. I want my work to be accessible to those who would seek it, without being spoon-fed by an algorithm to contrarians with the compulsion to loudly announce the first opinion they generate.
Scoping out Odysee's Vocaloid scene has been on my back-burner for a while; I wouldn't be surprised if it's still mostly nonexistent, but the platform seems to have gained some traction. I'll probably see how NND is doing lately as well, like you suggested.
At the least, I'm trying to work out a neocities page for my old GDrive of VSQs and other files I've made.

I hope what I'm saying makes sense, my thoughts are a bit foggy right now. And, thank you for the input!

>>1880
>I want my work to be accessible to those who would seek it, without being spoon-fed by an algorithm to contrarians with the compulsion to loudly announce the first opinion they generate.
Hate to break it to you anon but this is just what every social media website (and yes, video sharing like YouTube and Tiktok falls into that category too) has devolved into. Algorithms spoonfeed you things you don't like because they know it'll make you spend more time on their site. And this is probably why you're also getting negative comments. Or maybe you need to put effort into mixing your covers, a lot of people don't and they end up sounding really bad.
https://www.techtransparencyproject.org/articles/two-studies-social-media-algorithms-fuel-online-hate

>>1880
I mean you can technically just turn off the comments right? Idk

>>1884
Forgive me anons, I am a brainlet. Turning off the comments as a whole is something that had never occurred to me but is a great idea. I'm quite literally on the spectrum so sometimes I can go my whole life without connecting basic dots if the correlation doesn't occur to me. Thank you!
>>1881
And thank you for the information, it makes sense. I've lived under a rock the past couple years and appreciate the patience as I try to expand my horizons.

I will not derail the thread any further, apologies.

>>1711
something from 2007 being 18 years old feels incredibly wrong but i guess that's time for you

When and why did Vocaloid channels stop reprinting content from NND? Almost every iconic vocaloid song on youtube was posted by a channel dedicated almost exclusively to reprinting NND songs. What happened and why is it only Spanish channels that do this now?.

>>2131
i guess because most producers post their stuff onto youtube now. this still does happen though, i have a few friends who post nnd stuff (and are english speakers)

>>2132
link their stuff, its been getting harder and harder for me to find channels like that

>>2139
Thank you anon, i've been saving channels like those that are still active. That and vocaloard (with filters) are how i keep up with the less mainstream stuff.

>>2144
There's a lot of cool places to find niche stuff. I found one of my new favorite producers from scrolling through KARENT with a few others from VocaDB

>>2150
Thank you for sharing this, by the way. I'm not the anon who asked, but I found Sukoya Cathedral through the KARENT by-vocal categories, and other artists which I plan on checking out later. Their music is lovely, and I'm grateful to have made the discovery.

>>2131
Japanese producers dislike it iirc. It makes sense after recent happenings in the fandom although I’m pretty sure there was never a point where they were particularly fond of it, especially considering how anal Japanese people tend to be in general when it comes to piracy and copyright. Unauthorized reprints are why Hazuki no Yume had to disband I’m pretty sure, and I’m so sad because Vocaloid translations have significantly dropped in quality since imo. (How hard is it to ask for permission, especially when they seem eager to support us otherwise? Even Caststation still supports Western VocaP despite our side of the fandom’s shitty treatment of him.)

When did vocaloid become almost 100% Miku? I know she's always been the face of vocaloid but i remember up until maybe 2019 people still used IA, Gumi, etc.

I remember when Yohioloid was fairly common in the Western community
I remember when V4 released
I still remember my first UTSU-P song - Daiben - before he even uploaded to YouTube (Granted, it was 2013 so I was late)
I remember when COMMUNICATIONS imploded
I remember when ProjectOverDoze imploded
I remember when researching every last Vocaloid and their sound, as well as fanloids, were considered community etiquette and not doing research was frowned upon.
I remember anticipating every new MASA song, and my favorite being Bunker Buster (and Last Years)
Granted, I'm not an oldfag-oldfag by any means. But 2013 was one of the last years where old Vocaloid culture was present, dissipating in 2016-17

When seeing that some people here and other chans, let alone social media, consider older non-Crypton Vocaloids as wholoids/don't even know about them. I feel like I nearly have the whole Vocaloid catalog memorized and I recognize so many overlooked UTAU too

Part of me feels bad for him

>>17811
Honestly by today's standards what he did wasn't nearly as bad as it was in the 2010s when the whole thing went down

>>17827
Pocaloid is for the most part normalized these days isn't it?

>>17835
It's harder to spot these days, and even if they find out you use it they probably won't care too much. Pretty much every new western producer uses pirated voicebanks anyway.

>>17840
This

I hate how normalized pocaloid has become, but if it makes people try out less popular loids I guess it's not so bad

>>17849
What's wrong with pirating 'loids? Especially if you're a newbie who can't afford them?

>>17849
Good. No one should be harassed for pirating a 200 dollar voicebank for an obsolete engine that V6 can't even run.

>>17850
Less money for the devs, meaning more chance of the vb going obsolete since it won't be profitable, but at same time it might get more people to buy but still. You like the vb then buy, don't just keep using it.

>>17855
Only the Crypton ones are 200 dollars, and thats because they also include Piapro Studio. Most voicebanks are under 100 dollars.

>>17858
Honestly with voicebanks like Piko it's your only option

>>17861
What if Piko died because too many people pirated him

>>17866
I mean the lack of sales did play a role i guess

>>17827
>>17835
It wasn't just piracy, he lied to everyone else involved and told them they were working on a real Vocaloid. Also claimed to be a "Vocaloid producer" when he was actually plagiarizing random instrumental tracks and throwing vocals on them

>>17811
Who is this

>>17866
Honestly, like non-pirates, pirates prioritized Rin and Len append over him. Not that he didn't have fans, he just was a few weeks from rin and len append, which screwed him over.

The only vocal who likely was affected the most was VY2, especially since he never got that V4 release. iirc his V3 was the most pirated at one point.

It's hard to tell which banks piracy had affected the most though. These days it's not as bad of an issue for most of the companies since their market is much more stable. It only really did damage early on, in retrospect.

I'm a nice guy so i'll be the one to spoonfeed. Anon's pic is the icon of Planty-P, a producer who back in the day was highly controversial for his use of Pocaloid (pirated Vocaloid) and his contribution to Stella, a hoax Vocaloid by Vocaloid Otaku (defunct Vocaloid forum) members that used illegal XSY combinations.

Plagiarism is unfortunately extremely common in the small WVF. I certainly don't like that they did that, but I have issues with far more recent things instead.

>>17935
VocaBoomer + the number of downloads for VY2 came from the wiki. It’s been at least a decade now since someone shared those numbers so they’re likely very different now and make more sense.

>>17977

>>17958
>>17985
Even at the time I don't think it was the most "extreme" drama, it was just a rare case where everyone agreed he was a grifter

>>17985
It wasn't the worst thing, sure. I think my dislike is more from personal differences due to things revealed way after Stella than how "extreme" the situation was. I can't judge Planty too harshly just because I shortly fell down that rabbithole when everyone pushed me away, too.

>>17989
Dunno much about this but I did just find out he's gonna be 40 in a few years. I'm not ready for the wvf to be middle aged lol

>>17811
Planty Q&A on /leek/ when

>>17991
Almost everyone who got into the fandom when I did is at least 10 years older than me, ~2013 in my case. It's interesting to see someone 20 years older instead, since most WVF producers and cover artists also started as teenagers and he was well into adulthood. I remember it was also a really different place, the modern WVF behavior didn't really become a thing until 2016 or so, but as a tradeoff piracy was seen as extremely evil until the newgen era. I hope one day the general WVF will calm down, but in order for that to happen Twitter will have to go down permanently I think.

>>17995
I'm a producer in my 20's so I wonder if this is the image people will have of me in 20 more years, and that's assuming i'm both alive (health issues) and still a producer in 20 years.

>>17996
I'm also in my 20s, albeit under 25 and over 21. After all this time and the amount of software I own I highly doubt I will ever leave. If I'm alive in 20 years as well I wonder if the general Western community would be a better place, sort of reminiscent of here. Right now there's a lot of glaring issues I also went over in the general thread, but I do try to have hope. I've noticed a lot of newgens are starting to be pretty pleasant to be around as compared to the new or young fans when I was heavily invested in the actual community side years ago.

>>17997
They're really not that different

>>18006
This

>>17995
I was in high school around that time, so I have more... mixed feelings. The early 2010s were the messiest time in the fandom for *me*, but I'm pretty sure that's just what being a teenager is like, lol.
The worst part about that era was how difficult it was to get rid of people who did actual fucked up stuff. I can understand why the culture shifted in the other direction, even though it's devolved into annoying manufactured drama.

How were you guys even exposed to drama in the 2010s? My entire experience was watching videos and enjoying them.

>>18015
Mine was that and reading fansites (all of which are either dead or inactive now)

>>17999
The problem with older fans was primarily stalking and making a callout every 5 seconds while exiling anyone they dislike for any reason even after half a decade. I feel like I saw significantly less issues like that in 2025 but it could have just been toned down and handled more privately, I can think of exactly two incidents instead of over 10.
The newer fans are definitely annoying, but more in a puritanical sense. Some aren't like that, at the cost of mainly being tourists. I've seen a small group of neither that gives me hope, who are actually learning how to use the software and are invested in wholoids in the same way I was.
>>18015
Every last incident that involved me also involved dicksword so I'm extremely glad this place doesn't have one, doesn't allow shilling them, and probably never will. Once you start interacting with creators in the space, you will see that's usually the cause of incidents in the WVF. If producers and cover artists don't network, their reach is less, but they also nearly eliminate the risk of getting harassed.

>>18015
Aside from what the other anons said, forums and social media were already a thing back then. Even dicksword started in the mid-2010s, before that it was Skype.

I haven't tried to do this either but as I've mentioned in the general thread I would think it would be nice if producers started using Odysee or if we set up a PeerTube specifically for Vocaloid and otaku related stuff but making a PeerTube instance grow would be difficult since none have been successful since how limited content is on any instance and they tend to be used just for personal publishing. Niconico and Bilibili has lower resolution for some reason so I don't think they are best platforms. I heard that Bitview is getting some users too but it's proprietary so I would be concerned of it eventually just following the same path as YouTube in time.

I wonder what the consensus is on when someone becomes a Vocaloid fan. Is it when you hear your first song, when you start seeking out vocalsynth art and music, when you start keeping track of creators and/or following the community, or is it just when you begin identifying as a fan? I only ask because I think I fall into different eras depending on the answer (not that I can even remember what years they were, and by no stretch of the imagination would I be considered a Vocaboomer, at least not now), and despite being here, I don't even really consider myself a Vocaloid fan.

>>19819
I think the average normie who only knows Miku and Teto counts but i would only consider you a real fan if you're extremely autistic about vocaloid to the point where you can name one synth per engine

>>19821
Yeah I notice that this site places a lot of emphasis on knowing different voicebanks and what they look and sound like, something that I honestly never paid much attention to before coming here. My priority was always whether any given song sounded good to me or not, and it still is really.

>>19814
I agree with this, also the golden era didn't stop until 2015-2016 when everyone noticed the OCs taking over from the Kagepro copycats.

>>19816

>>19821
Random person who knows mikuteto from their youtube feed is a casual. IMO a dedicated listener for ~1yr is a fan.

>>19816
I see the GHOST copycat era as 2016-2019 because that was when producers that mimicked GHOST were at their prime. Nowadays their copycats are much rarer but usually higher effort, though I don't remember much of any copycats from 2015 and before
>t. got into Vocaloid in 2013 and Ghost in 2014

>>19832
Now they copy 32ki instead

>>19833
There's still a couple Ghost copycats but one's mostly trying to do their own thing and the other copies other Ghost copycats from back in the day. Both sound pretty good for small producers at times but also struggle with mixing a lot. You're absolutely right that most try to copy 32ki now though.

I wouldn't say this fits me since while I have been around since the 2000s there was a gap of years where I was not keeping up with everything because back then I just wasn't in the right loop to really hear much outside of the more popular songs and only a few years ago started listening again randomly and listening more than I did in the past so I fit in everywhere I think. Also I'm not old enough to be an actual "boomer", probably most of us here aren't literally boomers. Not that I think generational theory holds any water, I think it's a dumb idea to divide people that way.

>>19928
Vocaboomer is a term invented by the PJSK fans to refer to pre-PJSK vocaloid fans i believe. It isn't literal. A lot of the older Vocaloid fans are Millennials or older Gen Z (and Gen X in some very rare instances).

I thought it would have had more to do with like "back in my day" kind of stuff but Im also half asleep

I couldn't relate to the majority of Vocaloid fans that only like Miku or Teto for the ironic memes, and I didn't get Sekai fans.
Also people just being very strict about Vocaloids and how they should be portrayed despite them kind of being like blank slates you can do anything with.

>>2683
god this.. it's always either Miku or Teto. There hasn't been any mainstream songs using Luka, Meiko, Gakupo or any of the other loids.

>>19938
I think this comes from two things:
1. Mesmerizer is insanely popular and created tons of fans, so it's had an outsized influence on what kind of songs get popular lately
2. The "runner-up" loids are more subject to trends, and characters like Luka, Meiko, and Gakupo were already being replaced by Yuki, Una, and Flower ten years ago. Which can be a hard pill to swallow if you're an oldfag.

>Yuki
i'm cool with this

All of them only got big around the pandemic, which is not 10 years ago.

i never disliked any of the newgen stuff because why should i? But i feel like the newer stuff isnt as good/cool/crazy as the stuff from before was. The only thing i ever really hated was project sekai and thats just because it killed the diva games. Though i feel as of late theres more "ironic" fans that genuinely dont care about anything past "mikutetokuso" which i feel is an overall net negative for the vocaloid culture if i can call it that

2016 was the year Wada Takeaki went mainstream, Charles came out, and Inabakumori debuted, all while a bunch of V2 loids were falling off the charts. It's pretty solidly part of that post-golden age era.

Debuts don't usually mean immediate popularity. It takes time for word to spread. Back in 2016 I hardly knew anything about them.
A quick look at VocaDB will show you that flower's popularity peaked around the pandemic, and persisted for about 2 years after that. Same with Una.
For Yuki, she only really got big right after the pandemic.

Never said they peaked ten years ago. That's just when they started to get more hits than some formerly-relevant V2s. It's also true that the V4-era producers behind them didn't cross over as much with oldfags at the time (see the Sand Planet debacle), but that's where you get the "no variety" problem - old characters lose relevance if all the old producers leave, and new characters mostly come with new producers.

When it comes to those late 2010s Ps, Flower and Una were already pretty big. Yuki was underground for a bit longer, but Ikanaide started really blowing up in 2015, which is what set things up for the modern wave of Yuki producers.

>>20031
My point is that they weren't big during the post golden era, because that was the twilight years when Sand Planet was made and everyone thought vocaloid was dying. Pandemic ultimately started a completely different era because we had vtubers promoting songs like Kyoufuu All Back and Goodbye Sengen that are still big even today. Also a lot of people had lots of time in their hands so they started going deep in the rabbit hole. I personally think hey are part of the vocaloid renaissance, which only started after the dark ages. I wouldn't associate them with the dark ages.

What would you say was the actual worst era of Vocaloid? (music or fandom, doesn't matter)

For me it was the late 2010's

>>21103
23.exe heavily carried the late 2010's

>>21103
2023-24 in particular really sucked. Western Vocaloid thrived in the late 2010s, and that's primarily what I listen to. I don't really like many of the 2000s era songs either, but there's also a few classics I really love like Mothy's work and Love is War, and some not-so-classic 2000s songs like Until the Bitter End and Daiben

>>21103
For music I would definitely say the Kagepro flood and the copycats. Vocaloid got prescribed a very specific, narrow sound that everyone wanted to imitate or grab a piece of the audience for themselves. Not sure I would say when this "ended" but character PVs being the synths themselves again didn't really start roaring back for a few years.

>>21112
Funny thing is I've actually been seeing less and less OC PVs lately. Right now the top 10 on https://lvchart.com/ is all PVs using Miku or Teto because pretty much every new song is either Miku, Teto or both. Even Inabakumori who often uses Osage-chan in his music videos ended up using Tsurumaki Maki for his latest song. I know we got Looping the Rooms and that new Yukopi song this year but I think the trend's finally starting to slow down.

Forgot to mention this but it's happening on the western side as well. If you check Vocagathering, the majority of the songs use the actual characters in the MV instead of OCs.

>>21103
Post Mesmerizer era

>>21117
We're still in the mesmerizer era

>>21114
That specific Yi Xi design could maybe classify as an OC but at the same time people don't consider characters like Primina OCs.

Yes, and I miss the good old days when loid diversity was a thing

The synths being the face of everything at the moment signals to me at least that you have a lot of green listeners that aren't fatigued with the characters themselves, which you could definitely feel with Miku. It does feel obvious if you can remember the the lull and now how prominently Teto's rise is led with character PVs, but it's also pretty dramatic in the numbers. Chart shows the percentage of Nico uploads tagged originals featuring a character synth in the thumbnail.

The sharp drop from 2012 to 2013 was caused by my wife. I'm so sorry everyone... 2012 was the only time she got some nice PVs before the OCs took over.

>>21122
I know about Kagerou Project but wtf happened in 2017

>>21124
The prophet Hachi predicted the end of Vocaloid culture with Sand Planet

>>21122
I could see this as a win for wholoids if people decided to... y' know... use them

>>21125
I don't see how that correlates with the rise in OC PVs, but it might just be a general drop in Vocaloid songs considering the mid 2010s were the "Vocaloid is dead" era

IA did nothing wrong

Your fortune: Bad Luck

Looks like IA has a lot to answer to.

Your fortune: Better not tell you now

It's not her fault that she was used a lot in Kagepro

>>21119
Wish people cared about the other Vimalion characters as much as they care about BV Yi Xi

>>21132
That recent Yumemi Nemu / Rion song uses the actual characters :)

>>21122
Terrible news for Iyowa

>>21145
iyowa got into vocaloid thanks to kagepro so i'm not surprised his stuff always has OCs (i do think the iyowa girls are cute though especially kurari)

Chibi Miku-san ran long enough that she's Miku NT

>>21389
Is that FL-chan i see?

737.jpg - 315.57 KB (480x750)

>>21390
Yeah, FL-Chan was part of the main cast. This was the first Vocaloid manga that really took off back in the day, even though nobody posts about it anymore.

>>21392
I remember Chibi Miku but i assumed they stopped making it around 2013 which is when i stopped seeing it.

I'd still count 2012 as oldfag tbh

Much better but add the text back to Honorary Oldfag

Agree. 2012 era was still similar to 2011 culturally. The Tumblrification of Vocaloid began in late 2013 and continued up to 2018 with the Tumblr porn ban that sent everyone to Twitter but the highlight of the mid 2010's was the collective mindset that Vocaloid was no longer what it used to be.
