What are altchans? They sound interesting

It's in the name, alternative chans. 4chan-like imageboards that aren't 4chan. You're posting on one right now.

>>39
Ah, okay.

Since I've come to steward a small imageboard myself, I've taken to branching out and seeing what other people are working on

>>41
Share it anon I'm curious

Megidochan
I can't say it's a board about Homestuck anymore, but I tried to lend it a homestuck flavor

>>44
>Megidochan
I've actually seen it on a site that lists a bunch of imageboards but never actually went on it myself. Haven't read Homestuck since 2014 but it's cool that it exists.

>>45
Ah, any listing is likely long dead
Megidochan has been through like three domains/owners by now due to Homestuck fatigue (And 'p spam fatigue)

Almost every IB suffers from 'p spam, which sucks since it's a headache for staff and makes people not want to visit the site. On 39ch we got one on the first week but since then I have implemented as many safety measures as possible, which seem to have worked so far. If they don't I'll try getting in contact with the XJ-9K guy who has a site logging all spam across imageboards and has been researching the issue for a while now.

I've also considered adding a custom captcha to 39ch but I have no idea how to make one. I only have experience with HTML and CSS so I suck ass at PHP.

>>47
What is 'p spam? Like nsfw stuff, or?

>>48
Involving people who are not old enough to consent, yes. It's spammed by bots across imageboards and there's been an effort to fight it over the years.

>>49
……what the fuck? is there any way to report those types to the proper authorities?

I'm sure there's been attempts since it's been going on for years on basically every imageboard, including those for very niche stuff that are far detached from chan culture like Uboachan and Ponyville. But it's unknown where they operate or why they do what they do. There's a very good schizo thread on trashchan about this issue. So far the only things that seem to stop them are custom captchas (basically captchas built from scratch) or filters or a combination of both.

>>47
>>48
>>51
Yeah, I think it's humans doing the spam.
I can't speculate as to who/why, but the most benign explanation is that they're after money. In effect, all it does is instill users with a sense of dread, killing activity.

Recaptcha seems useless in my experience. Anything related to general competency or even googleable factoids only slows them down…
Good luck on a customized (I presume vocaloid based) version. I'm currently quite inept at PHP myself, but a community meme trivia question served to block their threads on my board.

I've been thinking of implementing a quiz type thing but I'm not sure how to set it up. If you'd like to help reach out to me via email.

>>52
Huh… How would it give them money though even????? I don't think them spamming anything, nevermind abuse, on an imageboard is paying them, right?

From what I understand they just think the imageboard crowd is into that stuff and will buy it from them. Ironically we had one on /otn/ earlier today when the site went back up, they somehow managed to bypass the filters but got quickly banned. Also that board in general is pretty dead so I don't think anyone saw it besides staff.

We really want to implement a custom captcha, we just don't know how.

>>55
Oh…… Does this mean dark web weirdos just obsessively invade and spam imageboards with the assumption we're "possible customers"? Creeps.
Is there any way to put some auto deleter that senses 3DPD in general so staff doesn't have to be traumatized, maybe?

>Does this mean dark web weirdos just obsessively invade and spam imageboards
Tor access is completely blocked on 39chan and we don't have a dark web mirror of our site. So no, these people are not using Tor. It's likely that they live in countries where this type of stuff isn't treated the same way as it is in America. Afaik these human "bots" mainly come from Russia and 3rd world Asian countries.
>with the assumption we're "possible customers"
Correct. But I'm not even sure who on a vocaloid forum would really want to buy that kind of stuff. We're not the only place with a "weird" audience that has been targeted. Fujochan, for example, has been targeted too, and their audience mainly consists of women who want to fuck 2D boys. So I'm not sure what they even gain from doing this on niche boards.
>Is there any way to put some auto deleter that senses 3DPD in general so staff doesn't have to be traumatized
Maybe when AI gets better this could become a possibility but for now we have to do it manually or rely on filters. I've spent a lot of time on Twitter and other Imageboards where those types of bots are common so as depressing as it sounds I'm not traumatized by it. It does shock me a little to see the content initially, but that's just one of the things that comes with being a mod on a public website.

>>57
I help out at Nashi Kouen (which is supposed to be an all ages imageboard) and we get gobs of the spam. The admin added a filter to ban images perceptually regardless of it being resized or anything, but since it involves a manual component, that just means the person running the spam script will manually attach different pics to get around the perceptual hashing…

I think I heard something about endpoint detection for shortened links that some boards use since the links they post allegedly go to the same one or two sites, but I don't know anything specific about that.

Indieweb.org

Indie/non-profit wikis and wiki farms/hosts like Miraheze and Wikidot (Avoid Fandom.com like the plague whenever possible! Install Indie Wiki Buddy and use BreezeWiki for anything that doesn't have an independent wiki yet.)

Both Neocities and Nekoweb are both good for hosting your own personal site + viewing others', although most Neocities users are currently migrating due to the fact Neocities' host supports AI art.

The Fediverse, Bluesky is probably it's most popular site and Misskey, Voskey (a Japanese Vocaloid-centric Misskey instance) and Mastodon are also federated. There used to be Pawoo by Pixiv but I heard due to the lack of moderation and English speakers on the mod team. pedos (ones who like 3DPD kids not drawings) took over :/
There's also Baraag and Aethy out there for you perverts, lol
Been a lurker on Nashi for a while so it's nice to have you here. Blocking endpoints and filtering some url shorteners has (for the most part) worked for us. The only times when we get 'p spam is when they have their own non-shortened domains but I've got my eyes on this site 24/7 so when that IS posted it's deleted immediately. 39ch is meant to be a themed imageboard. Almost like a forum, but for vocaloid fans. So the last thing we want is bots kicking people out of our site by posting disgusting stuff.

I'm actually working on an indie equivalent to the Vocaloid Wiki if anyone is interested! Mostly because the reasons in vidrel + I hear it's full of drama, mod infighting, and misinformation.
Fandom.com is also kind of terrible for documenting the vocal synth scene specifically because they want to appeal to advertisers and be kid-friendly, they took down a bunch of lyrics to songs like Duke Venomania a few years ago. (To clarify: I was never a mod for or have ever been involved with the Vocaloid Fandom Wiki.)

Thanks anon! It's super W.I.P. and this is my first time using MediaWiki but the CSS turned out really pretty I think. My friend said they really like the font. Originally I was going to keep it private til' I had at least 5-10 articles (because right now minus templates and stuff there's basically only the front page orz) but if there's interest I might just open it now instead.

I kind of want to focus on more obscurer synths and ones with little to no English-language documentation like talk synths (Zundamon my beloved) and Chinese vsynths etc., also things like lost Vocaloid media which I don't think the current Vocaloid Wiki covers at all. (and LMW also said they don't want to cover Vocaloid)

>>152
If you end up adding other synths please don't fuck up Ritsu's gender like the UTAU wiki did. Okama are not women.

>>153
Thank you that was another concern I had lol! Adding pronouns for characters that lack them makes no sense. Ironically, in their attempt to be progressive, it just implies you can't headcanon them as anything else (because we know how people get when you headcanon a minority as a non-minority.)

The entire reason I added that yellow infobox was so people wouldn't get mad at me for listing the VIPPERs as their original genders haha

Doing god's work, anon. Is this going to be self-hosted or does it run on some Wiki farm site like Miraheze? I'm ESL so I'm not the best at writing but I could try contributing.

>>152
Any plans to include fanloids like Neru, Haku, etc and music video characters like Osage, Rena Nanase, etc?

>>155
Thanks so much! Originally wanted to and tried self-hosting but my programming is a bit rusty (and .wiki domains are expensive, even on Namecheap, orz), so it's on Miraheze for now. Luckily there's always the future.
>>156
Totally! It's actually an all-encompassing vocal synth wiki rather than Vocaloid-exclusive, I also got the greenlight to cover vocal synth culture in addition to music and software, MV characters would totally fall under that. A page on Osage-tan is a really good idea. Really disliked how fragmented the Vocaloid & vocal synth Fandom Wikis are and wished we could just have everything in one place.

My only restrictions would be on maybe non-notable UTAU and indie voicebanks like Diffsingers, because there's an infinite amount (plus there's already an English-language indie UTAU wiki, the Wikidot one, along with a pre-existing Diffsinger Miraheze Wiki that I am also uninvolved in) and I'd rather have people focus their efforts on things that don't have lots of English-language info or any info available at all.
Along with the more shock value songs like Kurumi Ponchio or Wash My Blood because even though Miraheze allows slight NSFW and isn't trying to pander to parents/children and advertisers unlike Fandom, they still have a "don't sexualize cartoons, even if it's legal" rule and it might get the wiki closed :v (Why I'm still a bit interested in self-hosting in the future, then we wouldn't have to worry about stuff like that.)

I used to run a database site for mv girls but shut it down due to a lack of interest. If you want you can use OCR or ChatGPT to scan these two images and use some of the stuff here for your wiki. Keep in mind that this was all written at the beginning of the year so some stuff is outdated like the part about the English translations of the 4komas not existing yet.

You're a lifesaver anon tysm. I can also open/unprivate the wiki now (or create an account for you so you can use it while it's privated) if you're interested in adding more!

>>160
I'll wait until it's open. Also i would really look into VPS or self hosting if i were you but if you cant thats understandable.

>>161
Alright, what's VPS? I'm unsure if I could trust myself with others' data either. When I say I'm a rookie coder I mean like. I barely know Javascript. Lol

vps - virtual private server
basically, you rent a VM from some company for web hosting

much cheaper than dedicated hosting since a single machine can run a bunch of sites, while being loads more flexible than traditional shared hosting (does anyone even do this still) since you can control the VM almost as if it were your own computer, rather than hoping the web host had the things you needed for your site installed

self hosting lets you get all the advantages of dedicated hosting but means you are basically opening up a machine on your home network to the entire internet and the infinite litany of attacks that can be brought to bear against it - fine if you know what you're doing, maybe a trial-by-fire experience at best if you don't

>>163
Thanks for info! Maybe once there are volunteers there might be a (better) programmer I add to the admin team or something who could help out with all of that, I have a mutual who's a bit of a programmer.

>>152
I never learned how to properly make an infobox in mediawiki

>>165
That's alright! I originally struggled a bit too + I intend to have an article writing guide on the site, in addition to "Article needs help" and "Article needs styling" tags for anyone unconfident about their skills. There's also templates so all you have to do is type {{Infobox}} rather than having to re-create every infobox from scratch every time.

>>158
>>159
Im actually interested in remaking this project. Any recommendations for wiki farms that aren't fandom or miraheze? The former is dogshit in every way imaginable and the latter is too complex for my zoomer brain.

>>192
Unfortunately no..Fandom and Miraheze both run on MediaWiki though, so I imagine it'd be a bit similar? I can't really think of huge differences between the two minus Miraheze's way better UX. In my mind Miraheze (and Wikidot) are just ad-free Fandom

Nvm, there's Wikidot, but idk how different it is from the other two

What software/(wiki) host did you run the site on previously?

>>193
wikidot i heard is held together with sticks and glue

>>203
Unsuprised considering how broken the UTAU Wikidot Wiki is (yet is still somehow better than Fandom due to the lack of ads and AIslop), I guess the best road for anon to take would be to look into hosting (or getting a service that hosts) their own MediaWiki instance? If they have a bit of programming knowledge it can be ran on Docker iirc.

>>205
I also wouldn’t mind them posting it on my wiki! I should’ve waited to announce it cuz god it’s taking long (´・ω・｀;;;)

>>193
Miraheze has this weird rule where your wiki must be active or they'll shut it down. I can see why they do it but at the same time i'm not the biggest fan.

VOCALOID.6….jpg - 81.60 KB (600x425)

Even if chans aren't super active these days and most people have moved over to social media 39ch is still some of the most fun i've had online and its been nice having a small community to discuss vocaloid with that's not filled with children. I wish there were more of these small niche discussion sites, they're slow but comfy and usually inhabited by people who are actually passionate about what they discuss.
Merry christmas you beautiful motherfuckers and long live Mikuchan.

Any forums that aren't garbage and are still active?

maybe forums aren't as active as most modern social media, but they sure are more fun to use

>>262
i just wish there were any of them still active for any of the things i like. for vocaloid there's a few but 39ch is the only place that doesn't intimidate me.

the only forums I know of (that aren't imageboards) that I frequent are sadly on animebytes which is a private torrent tracker, so to access that ppl sadly need to be invited in or fill out an application (which opens rarely anyway iirc)

>>263
That's fair some sites can be intimidating at first for me too, but eventually i'm just "eh, what the heck" about it

>>265
It's more so the fact that i don't feel welcome in any of them, that's post-COVID internet in general for me. 39chan is by weirdos for weirdos so it doesn't have that issue. I haven't been on those forums beyond the frontpage but i can assure you that they probably ban discussions about Rabbit Hole, Mimukauwa, etc.

>>266
Yeah i feel that way too, the unwelcome thing, i just kinda slowly try to assimilate in silently then ease into it
