General thread for retro tech discussion since the /retro/ board has been dead for years now and staff doesn't seem to have any interest in bringing it back.

I wanna start this thread by saying that lately I've been kinda obsessed with projects which push the limits of old hardware and obsolete tech such as homebrew ports of recent games to consoles which were discontinued years ago (For example Sonic Mania on Dreamcast and PS2, yeah that's a thing now).

I've been meaning to buy an old camcorder. Not really for the nostalgia factor but because i find it more convenient than recording stuff on a phone and uploading to social media. Been debating whether i should get a tape camcorder or a DVD one. I'm likely going to go with tape because the high framerate is a plus and i just prefer the look of tape over DVD. Thrift stores are barely a thing where i live, and you'll be lucky to find a functioning camcorder at an affordable price so i'm likely going to have to import an used one off of Ebay and hope that it doesn't break or isn't already broken in the first place.

Right now I've got my eyes on the DCR-PC1E. Just look at this thing.

>more convenient than recording stuff on a phone
Is convenient really what you mean? Camcorders are bulky, need special batteries, need manual backups... I find myself more purposeful about what I shoot when using a dedicated camera, but rarely have I seen anyone say it's convenient.

On topic, I bought a Mavica recently for about twenty bucks because I actually want to take some period appropriate shots of my CRT setup. Our family had one as a kid, but I can't remember the exact model (one of the later ones that also did video), so I went with the earliest model (MVC-FD5) seeing how cheap they were. Most of my childhood and early teens was using crummy fixed lens early digital cameras like this.

Well yeah they're far from convenient in that aspect. I just like having all those memories saved as a physical tape or disc.

Forgot to mention but not having to rely on online services is a plus.

Alternatively just get a digital camcorder from the late 2000's with a MicroSD and all your stuff gets saved there unless you delete it or it somehow gets corrupted

the main issue with tapes is that often times old camcorders (especially DV ones) have very worn heads, so you need to use cleaning tapes and oftentimes that's still not enough to get it shooting consistently

I have some old phones that are not usable, Gameboy Color and Gameboy Pocket, PS2, C-VHS recorder, digital recorder, VHS to DVD converter, a weather radio from the 70s that has gone missing recently, a long missing Walkman cassette player and a Gateway Laptop that has Windows Vista on it with LightScribe burner that I think the mosfet burned out on so it wont power.

Most of those record at like 30fps if not less don't they
>>
>>3208
Anon what did you end up buying? I've been considering getting a tape camcorder for the same reason: I like having my videos in physical format

I'm the guy you quoted. I haven't bought anything yet.

Apparently you can no longer export CRTs to the US due to a recent law

Seeing this game run on a Playstation feels wrong, especially with all the warping

export or import?

I really wish people like you wouldn't launder tweets that say dick fuck for impressions.
The e-waste restrictions are about exports out of the US. It has always been hard to export CRTs out of the US (https://www.epa.gov/hwgenerators/requirements-transboundary-shipments-specific-wastes). It may potentially be even harder in the future, if new CMM export restrictions are put into place, which the directive signed literally just today makes only a possibility. If anyone has a screenshot showing their CRT was destroyed or "liquidated" it's entirely unrelated to that directive.

Lately I've been coding in fortran, super comfy, syntax is closer to basic and no {}s or pointers.
