Do any of you own or have any experience with smart "dumbphones" such as the Galaxy Folder 2? I've been thinking of buying pic related for the fact that i miss having a flip-phone. The only thing really holding me back from using those old Java OS ones is the fact that i use bank apps and other stuff so this seemed like a good option.

The Galaxy Folder is great imo you get the best of both world

I've thought about getting one and have had my eye on pic-related but my iphone 11 is still kicking with no signs of shitting the bed yet so I'm not sure if I'll ever do it.

I'm not sure if it's still a trend of not, but a little while back "Garaho" were trending. Flip phones were called Garakei, and Garaho are smartphones in the style of Garakei. So, it is a flip phone and fully functions like one, but it's also a full android phone and you can use basic apps like Line or dicksword or whatever.

It sounds like fun but honestly having an iphone is so convenient in Japan so unfortunately my flip phone days will probably stay in the past.

No because they're crappy and fake nostalgia. Just buy an actual retro phone instead.

The CAT S22 is a work smartphone so the "nostalgia" side is a bit unintended but its pretty good if what you want is a smart flip phone. Essentially a flip phone that just works in this current day and age.

Neru should really upgrade

Sorry to let some of you down but you can't just use some fossil of a phone everywhere. It has to work with current networks where you live. So if you live in a country like the US you cant use anything for calls unless it is compatible with VoLTE and if just using for data with a VoIP you at least need 4G connectivity. Of course there are places that still have 3G and 2G connections. Good news is there are flip phones that are compatible. There even are some with fairly modern hardware like the Freetel Mode1 Retro II for example which is only one i have come across yet with a decent camera and processor spec.

I kind of just hate how smartphones feel in the hand they are extremely uncomfortable to hold which is only reason Ive considered getting one but I never really liked typing where you have to hit the same button multiple times to get the letter you want and Im not into voice typing either and I do not always use both hands to type so a horizontal qwerty keypad doesnt seem much better either. Also because I cant just hold one due to them not being in stores it makes a decision more difficult especially since the ones I like are not cheaper than any smartphone. Also for whatever reason no one has made a custom rom for these.

For those of you who do like BlackBerry like phones with a qwerty keypad Unihertz makes some.

bump i want a flip phone badly but most of the new ones seem to suffer battery wise or don't let you install apps, not sure i could handle being without dicksword or whatsapp

What this guy said >>2385
But if you really must get one then get the one in OP
It's the closest thing you'll get to a Neru phone that's usable in your daily life

You install apps by sideloading and can make it easier to add more by sideloading an app store like Aurora Store, F-Droid / Droidify, and Obtainium. Though Google is trying to make Android not allow sideloading but that likely will only effect past few Android versions if they slip in some forced updates that disable it somehow. The bigger issue is lack of anyone making custom ROMs for them and potential app incompatability though I heard many work well on some versions of Android and not on others.I wonder how well they handle different launchers like olauncher. There is tons of tutorials online how to do sifeloading for these phones.

Among the most popular is the Sharp Aquos 601SH likely because the interface of the keypad being more trackpad like than some others in using it for scrolling and mouse control. Though that is years older than the Galaxy Folder 2 which itself is already a decade old. As I mentioned previously the most modern higher spec flip phone is the Freetel Mode1 Retro II. There may be more good options but those three seem to be among top choices for many.

pretty sure the Neru phone is a forma docomo d905i not a flip
>>
Forgot to mention I own a bar phone a BLU TankII I bought to use on a trip years back and they really suck to use but it was one without proper T9 text prediction and doesnt run Android so i have to click through a large number of menus to get to anything even just reading text messages is difficult. Also it has a funny habit of the back plate falling off if it gets dropped any.

Correct. Neru uses a D905i, but it is a flip phone if that's what you mean by a "flip".

more of a sliding phone than a flip phone

Now that I'm looking at more pics of it you're right mb

If I ever learn engineering stuff or get a lot of money I may design a flip phone. I have a new idea for input method I dont think has been tried before. I wont say yet because someone might take the idea from me. But alternatively to that I also had considered a full keyboard but in a different layout so it can be used vertically with one hand instead of having to do horizontal with two hands but not as tiny keys like the Blackberry or what Unihertz makes still. I have not designed that layout yet though so I have no idea on key order just using less columns and more rows. I would use a sodium battery for improved safety, though it would reduce battery life so unsure on that. A few other issues though. I think Android is a mess even the custom ROMs I am finding suspect as Google clamps down control so if I learned to program id make an OS for it too if I find it not satisfactory enough, probably BSD or MINIX based. Far too ambitious though for someone who never did anything like that and broke

commodore is making a dumbphone. what do we think about this? browsers and social media will be blocked on it. i personally dont give a damn about social media being blocked, but browsers is... kinda annoying. you can still open links, but there is no address bar.

also holy shit that transparent blue is beautiful.

Price seems steep vrry to me. This type of phone should not cost so much because smaller screen, less ram it should be closer to entry phones. This isnt some startup that lacks any capacity to manufacture so there is no excuse but greed it should be no more than $300 tops. Heck they even could bring down the price more if they used a RISKV chip, though I am unsure those chips are ready for anything but beta testers. Even old feature phones had browser access so that is an odd choice but likely you can just install a browser they probably just lack an app store installed and then keep you on a slightly modified webview type browser so there is likely a way around that. Not sure why they left out what orange LED is, probably maybe user programable or lights up during ringing. I do not know much about SailfishOS, I mord often hear people talk of PostmarketOS instead.
