I've been learning MMD recently so I wanted to make a thread for likeminded beginners to ask for help and tips and/or discuss their progress.

Check the /mmd/ sticky for helpful resources.
Another helpful site is https://learnmmd.com/

One thing I learned recently is headswapping (headhacking). Which is when you transfer the head from one model to another. Turns out its actually very easy to do in Blender.

Not entirely sure what I'll do with this information though. I could use it to make some ero pieces, or I could use it to easily change a character's clothes.

Use your newfound powers for evil and make us a nude V flower model.

Maybe

i've been learning shaders. what's used these days? because i remember raycast was the most popular option back then.
>>
>>927
It really depends on what you're trying to make. I personally use NCHLShader2 with a config that i saved as a pmm file.

Raycast
>>
>>932
I'm a bit surprised that even in 2026 it's still the go-to shader for a lot of mmd animators.
>>
>>933
I think it’s the flexibility? At least that’s why I find I’m so drawn to it
>>
>>927
Like that other anon said yep it depends but a lot of people still use Raycast today
>>

I've been trying this method recently but it always breaks the eyes. Is there any way to fix them?.
>>
Does anybody else make saves of empty scenes with effects applied to it? I do this to avoid loading them all one by one every time I open MMD.
>>
>>940
Heard its a weight paint issue but tbh I have no idea how to fix it either
>>
>>927
I think it still is. I personally at least still use it.

No idea why I didnt try MMD years ago back when I was doing raytracing using non GUI software that was kind of like programming how it was used and only did really one short animation of a fountain and generated an image of a sword in a stone with a cloth draped over it. Somehow at the time I didnt even know about anything easier to use and think to try using it. Now I dont have enough focus, motivation or time to use any modeling and animation software even though it is one of the many skills to add to my list of things I can not do.
>>
>>926
Not maybe. This is the call to action and you are refusing it. This is your heroes journey.
>>
>>946
Fine anon, I will. But like that other guy, I gotta figure out what's causing the eye glitch
>>
Hate to admit that to this day i still have no idea how to use the pmd/pmx editor.
>>
>>951
what do u need help with? i'm pretty acquainted with it
>>
>>952
nta but i never learned how to put clothes and hair on bases
>>
>>953
I just use Blender for that. It's a lot easier to work with.
>>
>>953
To put it simply, you make a copy of your base model and delete all of the bones/physics/rigid joints. Anything that's not the mesh basically.

Then you add your clothes or hair on top, fit and resize them. If there's, say, breasts poking out of the shirt, you don't need to bother with it right now, the main point is that it generally fits the body.

After this, you delete all of the body mesh from the material folder, leaving only your fitted clothes/hair. Then you save that model asnew and open your original model, then drag and drop your fitted clothes/hair on top, it's going to ask you if you want to open as new or "add", pick add, it will automatically merge the bones for you, so the clothes or hair move together with the body.

About earlier: if there's a bit of a body showing through, you usually just deal with it by deleting vertex of the parts that are poking through, so in that earlier example finding material for the torso and deleting the boobs.

Reminder that (You), yes you: the one reading this, should be making MMD animations. Stop mourning MMD and start reviving it, start making shit. I recently decided to pick it up after so many years to make stupid shorts.

Don't worry I've been making stuff, but it's probably too spicy for this board

Bumping just to ask if anyone knows how to fix this
