When I was younger, I went thrifting to some places with my best friend to make cheap cosplay. Characters like Dawn from Pokemon and Haruhi in her uniform from The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya come to mind. Do you think we could pull any vocal synths off like that? We cut up some old pants I had into the shape of the pokeball symbol for Dawn's hat, for one example.

for that you'd need someone dedicate enough to make the costume from scratch. toriko looks like an absolute pain in the ass to cosplay. ena and sui look very simple though.

As someone who's just getting into cosplay, is it really that expensive? I've been meaning to cosplay Oliver but the only costumes I've found online (Aliexpress btw) are like 100USD or more.

For popular characters you can always find a cheap costume for less than 100 dollars on some chinese site but for lesser known characters it'll always be expensive so its best to make it yourself.

Yeah especially those goggles can be a bit tricky for people with no experience in prop making

Reach out to cosplayers in your area via social media sites - Facebook, Instagram, or even Twitter really. Just talk to them, get to know them and if they're into Vocaloid you can talk to them about your idea. That's how cosplay dance groups get formed. If they've already cosplayed Vocaloid characters or are at least into it then they'll probably find the idea interesting.

I feel like Vocaloid posers are, well, not exclusive but guaranteed to be found in the US and some parts of EU. In Asia for example, I would assume they exist too but I don't know if they're as common.
Not to mention that a lot of them get paid to cosplay (or do OF) and don't give a shit about the series they're cosplaying as.

I'd like to cosplay a non human 'loid some day, like Pumpking, but I fear that absolutely no one would recognize him or recognize him as the wrong character. A few years ago I went to a con as Neo from the Matrix series and everybody thought I was some guy from Resident Evil.

Design looks sick imo so even if no one recognizes it you will still look cool. I see random loid cosplays all the time in meet ups and when I ask about them they usually turn out to be either utaus I don't know about or versions of popular loids from spesific songs so no one really questions it much.
