Someone people edit out their stand, while others use goosenecks stands that they weigh on one end and hide behind the legs so that they have nothing to edit out. Personally, I kinda like seeing them. It isn't for everybody, but I'm not taking pictures with the purpose of "make her not look like a doll" so I don't need the stand out of frame to help sell that, if you know what I mean. Unfortunately, with a saddle stand like I have, it is pretty difficult to hide it using clever angles if I want to shoot her from the front.
I'm sure this is more than you cared to hear, but I do get what you're saying. I'm just (perhaps foolhardily) trying to do something different with my pictures and still figuring out exactly how I want to do things. I use a painted baseplate for one of my doll stands, so perhaps I'll look into making different bases that blend a bit more into the scenery. It won't help with the upright part of the stand, but it'll be something

For me, my excuse for buying one ways "I'll use it to practice photography." Since then, I've got better at taking pictures, and now I'm traveling around and exploring my area. Some people choose to use them for diorama stuff, others to sew clothes, and others will heavily customize dolls to make their own. There is a surprisingly large community of people surrounding them too, so it can also be pretty social through organizing meets and group events.
It is a very rewarding hobby in that way, because you can get a lot out of it, but you'll get very little if you don't try.
