 No.21305

If somebody has never heard vocal-synth music before, and you wanted to get them into it, what song would you show them?

Would you have them listen to a realistic vocal or a robotic one? Would you pick a popular song or a personal favorite? Would you showcase something mainstream or rooted in otaku culture? Would you start with a cover of a song first sung by a human, or a vocal-synth original? Would you recommend a song from a genre they liked, or something that they've never heard before?

If you were someone's introduction to Vocaloid, what song did you pick and how did it go?

 No.21306

>>21305
Probably Unknown Mother Goose by wowaka but honestly I think the best way to get someone in to Vocaloid is by taking them to a concert. Too bad they're not as immersive now.

 No.21307

>>21305
Probably ask for their favorite genre and show them a popular Vocaloid album in that genre. I got my metalcore fan friend into Vocaloid by showing them Yuyoyuppe.

 No.21308

>>21305
I'm not a Flavor Foley fan but their music is probably the most accessible Vocaloid stuff so that

 No.21314

>>21306
I've never liked Unknown Mother Goose as much as wowaka's earlier stuff and I don't know why - it's a good song. If I had to guess, it's because it takes more inspiration from other Vocaloid music (it's tagged as yakousei on RYM); that also might be the reason that it's his most popular song, (assuming the view count is accurate; older songs have so many reuploads that it's impossible to be sure).

My first thought was Rolling Girl since that was the song that really got me into Vocaloid, and to this day it's still my favorite vocal-synth song. But because I love it and have heard it so many times, it's difficult for me to guess how someone else would respond to hearing it for the first time, because I barely even remember how I felt.

 No.21328

>>21314
I like it because it feels like a tribute to Vocaloid culture and it's also the last thing Wowaka did for Vocaloid before his passing. But I also like it because it's very energetic and memorable. My first Vocaloid concert opened with UMG and it was fucking beautiful.

Vid unrelated, I just like this specific performance of the song.

 No.21329

>>21306
>Too bad they're not as immersive now
I still think they are worth it for the experience alone but yeah, sucks that they won't be using holos anymore

 No.21330

i feel like wowaka's music i general makes me emotional, there's really nothing like it nowadays
i guess some iyowa songs make me feel that way but that's about it

 No.21339

>>21305
I would show them shiranai shiranai because it is what got me to love IA but also because I know it works since I turned one of my friends into a casual fan with it.
But that was ages ago so your mileage may vary.

 No.21341

>>21305
Something close to the genres of music they already like

Just unobtrusive pop music? 40mP, inabakumori
Something more ballady/emotional? ryo/supercell, VocaliodP
Upbeat/EDM but nothing hardcore? kz/livetune, emon(Tes.)
A bit harder EDM? niki
Metal? Yuyoyuppe
Trance? HSP, Clean Tears
Drum n Bass? r-906, Sheeno Mirin
More complex/experimental kinds of music? AMK Haniwa
Memey but very catchy? LamazeP
Over the top stuff? nunununu

 No.21342

>>21341
And the entire Mikgazer album for Shoegaze

 No.21343

>>21341
>A bit harder EDM? niki
Early niki is kinda emo/hardcore and closer to what Yuyoyuppe makes.

 No.21344

>>21339
>shiranai shiranai
It's really cute how you refer to A Tale of Six Trillion Years and a Night by it's chorus.

>>21341
>Metal
also Utsu-P

 No.21348

>>21341
what if i like trip hop

 No.21351

>>21344
Well it is easier to type than the entire title

 No.21508

I'm shocked no one said Roshin Yuukai, one of the most beloved Vocaloid songs of all time and probably the most accessible.

 No.21519

>>21508
Sometimes i forget theres people who call Meltdown that. Thanks PJD.

 No.21520

>>21508
You're right. If I didn't know anything about who I was recommending the song to, I would have to pick Meltdown. It's a great song in a genre with broad appeal, and it showcases everything special about Vocaloid without being "weird". Even the music video is perfect.

If I knew the recipient had TikTok brainrot, I might pick something with more stimulation, like Triple Baka (or Mesmerizer ig).

 No.21521

>>21341
Showing nunununu to a non-vocaloid fan is probably classified as a war crime under the Geneva Conventions.

The only thing that might be an issue is that the song is about wanting to jump into the core of a nuclear reactor (come to think of it, Rolling Girl also has themes of suicide). Both songs were in Project Diva, so it's probably fine. I wonder if native Japanese speakers view the songs differently, I would like to ask, unfortunately it looks like >>>/negi/ is dead on arrival.

Ask in the /j/ thread

 No.21527

>>21523
Meltdown is a classic, but I think a lot of people in Japan consider the "Vocaloid dark ages" stuff to be the most accessible. A lot of the hit songs from back then are pretty much top 40 j-pop with vocal synths.

most vocaloid songs are about death or sex lol

Both sometimes...

Alright I did it, but it's been two months and I don't think OP is coming back. I'd be nice if we had enough Japanese users that we could have a cultural exchange that wasn't so one-sided. Right now any Japanese person here would likely get flooded with questions, which would get tiring. Where are the remaining forum using Japanese Vocaloid fans anyway?

2chan a.k.a Futaba still exists but I think a majority of the Japanese internet moved over to Twitter. But I think there are still active BBS sites out there, I wouldn't know.

A lot of Japanese Xitter users migrated to Misskey I heard

 No.21565

>>21564
Correct me if i'm wrong but i think Misskey in Japan is about as 'niche' as Bluesky in the west. People have accounts there but they mostly stick to Twitter.

 No.21610

>>21565
Any clone of Twitter is bound to become niche because Twitter made everyone into attention hungry losers. So when they don't get more than 10 likes on a post on the clone they come back crawling to Elon Musk's shithole.

Honestly I am sick of the Twitter format. I'm sick of every new social media site trying to be Twitter.

We need to go back

 No.21646

I think I would not even care to try to make them into it. It is something you fall into on your own. If they asked what I like id show them songs I like personally.

>>21610
I would just keep this confined to the enshitification thread since this topic comes up in so many threads it kind of dominates conversation whenever it comes up.

>I would just keep this confined to the enshitification thread since this topic comes up in so many threads it kind of dominates conversation whenever it comes up.
I agree, we all know Xitter sucks. I also agree with your song take; if someone really gets into Vocaloid, it will be because they wanted to, not because you showed them the perfect song. Still, I think there's value in at least considering what song you might show someone and why. Even if it ends up being the only Vocaloid song that they ever listen to, it would be nice if they liked it.

I found this. The site hasn't been updated in a while, and some of the links are broken. Japanese BBS sites have so many boards, I find them really difficult to navigate. I did find the Vocaloid board on Futaba, but it seems like it's mostly a link dump without much discussion. Also there's an AI generated porn thread for some reason.

Careful browsing 2chan because the mods aren't very fast and sometimes you'll come across those CSEM spam bots that plague most imageboards

Meaty is the only producer i've seen who consistently makes trip hop. Kikuo has a few song you could call trip hop but you can count them with your fingers. You might enjoy the Vocaloid version of Substitute I linked.

 No.21727

>>21726
Another song you might like is Model Collapse, which is a bit more industrial than what you probably want but still classifies as Trip Hop and was praised by Meaty.

If you show it to the one guy who listens to experimental music there's a 50/50 chance he'll either love it or hate it
