And by this I don't mean producers like DECO*27 or PinocchioP, but lesser known producers like SLAVE.V-V-R and seeeeecun (although he doesn't create Vocaloid songs nowadays). Is this cause of the algorithm? Or do their songs have more appeal to non-Japanese listeners?

You've seen it, I've seen it, but seriously what's the source for this video? The model's been identified as LAT Miku but who made it, when was it made and in what software?

 No.23705

>>23704
As previously stated, the video is made in MikuMikuDance, the model is Appearance Miku, and the background is sample.pmm . The song is obviously World is Mine. In Project Diva, there is an option to have the lyrics track not play during missed notes, so that's probably what the audio is.

As for the source, I did search Niconico, YouTube, and Google in Japanese, but found nothing. However, dekinai Nihongo, so if anyone who can read Japanese wants to try, best of luck to you.

Several comments on multiple YouTube uploads were also asking where the video came from, but nobody seems to know, so this might just forever be a unsolved mystery.

Personally I don't see what's wrong with "overseas fans" if you need to communicate the split. Subcultural identity being tied to geography isn't novel to Vocaloid, and even the Japanese will class their participation down to prefectures for club events or fan concerts, but the identity is so loose for "western" that I don't really see much utility in that category. Especially since I don't think it even really encompasses places like China properly. "WFH" as adopted label just stinks of stan culture to me, maybe.

I call them western fans because that's what everyone calls them but 90% of the time its used to refer to English speaking fans.

 No.23848

>>23844
Modern vocaloid fandom does overlap a little with stan culture as much as i hate to admit that. Though i highly doubt the term originated from there because I've seen it decades ago.

 No.23892

>>23844
>>23846
"Western Vocaloid fandom" should be used when generalizing about societies descended from Europe, or in contrast to the "Eastern Vocaloid fandom", which includes countries other than Japan. For Western internet communities, language can be more important than where you live, so if people are speaking English, "English speaking Vocaloid fandom" is more correct than "Western Vocaloid fandom". However, for Eastern online spaces, nationality often takes precedent, so "Japanese Vocaloid fandom" usually means people who not only speaks the language, but who is also ethnically and culturally Japanese. "Non-Japanese Vocaloid fandom" or "overseas Vocaloid fandom" can be used to refer to all Vocaloid fans who are not Japanese.

If somebody has never heard vocal-synth music before, and you wanted to get them into it, what song would you show them?

Would you have them listen to a realistic vocal or a robotic one? Would you pick a popular song or a personal favorite? Would you showcase something mainstream or rooted in otaku culture? Would you start with a cover of a song first sung by a human, or a vocal-synth original? Would you recommend a song from a genre they liked, or something that they've never heard before?

If you were someone's introduction to Vocaloid, what song did you pick and how did it go?

How important is knowing a song's lyrics and meaning to you?

When I'm watching an anime or a foreign film, I read the subtitles, but when I'm listening to music, most of the time, I don't pay any attention to the lyrics. While I sometimes read a translation, or watch a music video with subtitles, for the vast majority of songs that I listen to, I don't have a clue what they are about.

Am I just dumb, or does anybody else do this too?

I'm fluent enough to listen to songs without subs, and while you're right that cultural context is important, it's not impossible to pick up on. I've gotten a fair amount through internet osmosis, like how ESL users do it.

 No.23257

>>23234
Well, that goes for any language doesn't it? Idioms, proverbs, cultural context is key to any language, and Japanese isn't too radically different. It's a barrier sure, but it's not that bothersome. Besides, that's also a part of the fun in learning and reading/listening/watching stuff in another language.

I didn't understand what 阿修羅の道 or 修羅場 (allusion/idiom to Buddhist demigods and their battles in their realm of reality with other gods) really meant when I first saw it when I was watching an anime, or what 嘘ついたら針千本飲ます (expression used for pinky promises) meant when I saw it for the first time in iyowa's Mercy Killing, or what 影踏み (children's game in which you step in shadows) was in kous's Layering Human Shadows. I can think of various other examples on the top of my head, but that would probably take up a massive block of text.

To reiterate, it helps to know that songs are poetry at the end of the day, and could have multiple interpretations depending on what the lyrics are about. Even if you understand everything literally and figuratively, there might still be multiple meanings attached to the lyrics.

One major complaint i remember about the Spanish vocaloids back in the day was that they all had European Spanish accents. To Spanish speakers the difference between European Spanish and Latin American Spanish is a bit similar to American English and British English. So imagine if all the English Vocaloids had British accents, it'd be something like that. In fact, I think one of the reasons LUAN and LUCIA were never released (aside from companies not wanting to pick them up) was because people bitched about the accent.
