If not, what translator do you suggest?.

I am. But I also already have Japanese friends. I want to be able to talk to them in real time like I'm talking to you and I'm not good enough to form sentences yet.

I imagine English to Japanese is easier than Japanese to English except for the occasional homophones in English. This is because Japanese is highly context specific so it is more difficult to machine translate. Ideally for personal conversations you should be using a local hosted LLM but in other cases I have been using a Mozhi instance and set it to "all engines" so I can compare different translations to get a better idea of what might be the actual meaning when going JP > EN

You can self host it but you don't have to. It is just a front end proxy for different translator sites like Google, DeepL, DuckDuckGo, MyMemory, Reverso and sometimes others depending on the instance. Here is one so you can get an idea what it looks like.

Firefox has a built in local translator that does not reply on servers but it doesn't work that great for Japanese.

I've tried their extension and it's effective for translating entire pages. Better than Brave's garbage built in translator at least.

What's unlikely great about their translation quality? Or is it just gut feeling?
Honestly GPT baseline is already really good at most JP<->EN translation, but I'm not familiar with what Kagi's secret sauce is for translate. They've trained models for search queries so I assume they've done a finetune for translate.

As someone who's used Kagi before, for me it's the accuracy with which it translated things and the ability to proofread stuff in case you made a mistake even in your native language. I've user other LLMs before like Chat GPT, Grok, etc but Kagi is the only one I felt was extremely accurate and I've been using it to talk to some of my friends who don't understand English.
