“I'm curious about something in Japan, but there isn’t much info in English—and I don’t even know where to start…”
If that sounds familiar, I can look up Japanese-language sources online on your behalf (as a Japanese speaker).

In general, anything Japan-related is fine—but I can’t guarantee I’ll be able to answer everything.
For example, topics like divisive current events (where opinions vary a lot) or information that requires a high level of expertise may be difficult to handle.
If I can’t give a solid answer, I’ll explain why as clearly as I can.

Feel free to correct me but I think what the anon you replied to was referring to is which songs the Japanese side of the fandom considers to be good for introducing someone to Vocaloid.

Over here it's common for people to recommend the classics (Rolling Girl, Meltdown, etc). You can get a general idea of what people recommend in this thread: >>>/leek/21305
But since Vocaloid is arguably more popular now than it was years ago, people also recommend new, popular songs like Mesmerizer.

I'll give my 2 cents and say that there's no definitive song to introduce someone to Vocaloid because at the end of the day everybody has different genres they like, but I do think that the classics are a good starting point.

 No.472

>>467
Oh so that has some earlier roots of Decora than I saw from other sources so that does complicate things if true. Thanks.

 No.511

Does the Japanese side of the Vocaloid community have their own forums to discuss Vocaloid? I know a majority has moved over to SNS such as Twitter, and I know that 2channel and Futaba Channel still exist, but are there no Vocaloid specific places? The western community has Vocaverse, UTAforum (For UTAU discussion) and 39chan.

Apologies if its a touchy subject but I wanted to know what the general consensus on piracy is in Japan, especially since in many countries (notably Latin American and Southeast Asian ones) it is seen as a need.

I recently saw an image of a comment that said something along the lines of "Telling my Japanese friend to use an emulator was like telling him to shoot his childhood pet". Is it really such a taboo subject over there? And if so, is it true that the majority of Japanese users are against it, or is there at least a minority that understands the issue and might even be in favor of it?.

How decent is Kagi for communicating with Japanese people online? I've heard good things about it and you can apparently translate text to non existent languages such as "Alien" with AI. But is it accurate? Is it good enough to talk to my friends from the other side of the world?.
If not, what translator do you suggest?.

>inb4 "just learn Japanese"

I am. But I also already have Japanese friends. I want to be able to talk to them in real time like I'm talking to you and I'm not good enough to form sentences yet.

>Anitubers in general kinda suck
I agree, I don't watch most anime YouTubers; most of the time their videos are just boring plot summaries followed by banal opinions. I like Hazel because she does a lot of research and tends to cover more obscure topics, and I find her perspective interesting.

One I watch is TheCynicClinic who oddly doesn't have many subscribers despite making videos for like a decade and actually puts research into them. Unless he is just taking content from someone else I am unaware of but I had not come across exact copies of his videos.

There also is an animator I like to watch Dong Chang who came from Canada but works in Japan so he's a lot easier to follow what he is saying on how the animation process works than someone you have to read subtitles for plus he had worked in Canada too so he can compare Western and Japanese animation methods.

I've gone to Acen the past few years so yeah, definitely wouldn't miss this either.

I will say, knowing the organizers and how this came to be, it's probably wishful to think this represents anything other than a con staff that wanted to make it happen. Back during AWM in 2017 and 2018 when CG was brought over, a lot of what we were saying about overseas fans finally getting attention didn't realize anything. Same with the Shiny Festa mobile releases in 2013. Bamco has a long history of throwing a bone to the US (specifically the US) every few years. Other than some exceptions like ML in Thailand, the brand doesn't really have much inertia outside of Japan.

 No.481

>>478
The 2011 anime was the entry point for a lot of current fans and it still holds up overall. Beyond that, since we're on this site I think I would say go in the directions that Vocaloid interests you because they were tightly coupled in their early history. There are equal concerts (even in the Vtuber vein now), fan creations, and music. If you like Slay the Spire or Uma, you'd probably have some fun the Gakumas game. The 9th anniversary in 2014 and MOIW 2014 and 2015 are well thought of for concerts. For music, probably listen to Gakumas if you like EDM (lots of Vocaloid producer influence here) or download the BEST OF 765 albums if you want a primer.

It's quite simple anon, just look at the designs of any of the girls (or guys for SideM) and choose which one that interests you the most. And I mean this completely seriously too. Learn about that character and listen to their songs, commus (basically side stories where you learn more about the character), watch the main story, etc. I recommend Gakumas or Shinymas because they have a pretty dedicated ENG fan translation team for the game and content. Gakumas has a smaller cast so it'll be less overwhelming. Both also have a PC version too. https://github.com/snowyivu/ShinyColors for the Shinymas ENG patch and https://gakumas.natsume.io/ for Gakumas.

As many of you know, Yoran Heling a.k.a Yorhel, the founder of the Visual Novel Database, has passed away on March 17th. No announcement had been made until now. Those of you who may not be entirely familiar with visual novels have probably stumbled upon his website through a VN called "Mirai no Kimi to, Subete no Uta ni", which made the rounds around the early 2010's and might be the most popular Vocaloid-related fan VN. Ultimately, though, VNDB was more than just a Visual Novel Database, as the title implies. It was a major contribution to otaku culture in general. Rest in peace, Yorhel.

I recently saw a thread on 4chan discussing the evolution of Japanese internet culture over the years. There were some interesting things said about 2channel/5channel (not to be confused with Futaba/2chan) and Futaba Channel/2chan.net.

Since this is the only imageboard out there with a Nihongo Culture board (rather than general Otaku Culture) I thought of importing this topic here.

Do you browse the Japanese internet? Do you feel like it has changed drastically or that some of its most important sites have fallen from grace?

Many years ago I had chance to work in the kadokawa herald for an international project based on a very famous dark fantasy writer, they had curiosity, real concrete interest and passion to embrace and to japanize something born in a different country. There are many difficulties in the common writing of such kinf of franchiese... the japaneses create emotional fresco fully different from the "europeans". But in time the Japan culture won the war for the global imaginary, only old generations can see that, the yooung people think that it was always like in the now.

 No.290

I support your only slightly coherent ramblings, but I can't help but laugh that you summoned Kadokawa, the blackest of black companies, in support of the amazingness Japanese culture.

More directly addressing your post, while I think it's true that Japanese cultural exports are having their most modern success, it's really mostly by accident. Conglomerates like Kadokawa in fact have been reticent to let Japanese culture expand while the internet has allowed global and unencumbered participation in cultures. Japan will benefit as we globally trend towards an even more visual culture, but they aren't the only winners and the tides can shift just as quickly as other players wise up. Look no further than J-pop's decay (beyond Vocaloid, a true subculture unencumbered by copyright and suits) while K-pop has eaten its lunch.
