39chan (pronounced "Mikuchan") is an anonymous English-language web forum for fans of Vocaloid. Since its initial launch on September 19, 2024, 39chan has grown into a space for casual discussion and has become the birthplace of various creatives, including artists, producers, and even UTAUloid makers. Due to the anonymous and unfiltered nature of the site, 39chan is intended for users aged 18 and older.
We operate similarly to other imageboard websites such as Futaba Channel, 4chan, Uboachan, etc. However, 39chan has a focus on vocal-synth threads and discussions. 39chan aims to be a safe hub for otaku and old-school vocaloid fans without the strict censorship of modern websites. Please familiarize yourself with the rules before posting.
An early version of the 39chan concept saw the light of day in 2024 as 'VocaHaven', a phpBB forum created by 'moth' intended as a drama-free website for old-school fans of Vocaloid to talk about their favorite singing synthesizers. However, due to a lack of activity, it would be shut down later the same year.
Around September, a project known as 'Nanachan' entered private testing. This project was originally created as an anonymous imageboard for otaku culture and themes. But due to the oversaturation of imageboards covering such topics, it would later be repurposed into a Vocaloid themed discussion website named "vsqchan" (in reference to the Vocaloid Editor's file format). The site officially launched under the name 39chan on September 19, 2024.
39 is one of the ways to spell out Miku in Japanese, with the number 3 being pronounced "Mi" (み) and the number 9 being pronounced Ku (く). Therefore, 39chan is intended to be pronounced 'Mikuchan'.
In some ways, yes - but mostly no. 39chan uses open-source software modeled after 4chan's functionality, but that's where the similarities end. The only real connection is that the site was founded by former users of 4chan's /jp/ board.
We have our own distinct rules, and following them is essential to remain part of the community. Our staff is dedicated to keeping 39chan a comfortable, welcoming space for everyone 18+ who shares an interest in Vocaloid.
39chan doesn’t require any kind of registration. Just choose a board, type your post, and hit submit. The name field is entirely optional.
To create a thread simply fill the "Subject" and "Comment" sections of the form, complete the captcha, and click the "New Topic" button. You can reply to an existing thread by opening it via the "Reply" button and filling the required sections of the form like you would when making a new thread.
If you want to reply to a thread without bumping it to the top of the page you can use the "Sage" option, this is especially useful to prevent necrobumps.
New threads keep the website fresh and present new topics of discussion. With that said, we highly encourage that you make new threads instead of centralizing all potential topics under one single thread.
A tripcode (#password) is a basic method of user identification that generates a hashed string visible next to the username. However, it offers limited security and can be easily spoofed.
A secure tripcode (##password) uses server-side encryption, providing a significantly higher level of protection and ensuring that only the original user can generate the same identifier.
Example Name: Robert ## Tripcode
We take a firm stance against Discord servers, as we believe they detract from activity on platforms designed for open discussion, such as 39chan itself. For that reason, 39chan does not have an official Discord server and likely never will. An IRC channel may be considered in the future, but nothing is currently planned or confirmed.
Currently your only way to reach out to staff is via the /meta/ board. Our social media accounts are not owned by 39chan staff members and are used exclusively for posting news and updates. We are planning on adding a contact form to 39chan.
39chan is currently owned by Team 39 (T39), a small group of developers and moderators formed specifically for this project. Puzzle currently serves as the owner and manages and moderates the imageboard as of the current date.
